Carpenter ants are one of the most destructive pests found in New Hampshire homes. They tunnel through wood to build nests, which can lead to serious structural damage if left untreated.
At New England Wildlife, we make the process simple. In most cases, we can provide a fast, accurate quote based on photos and a quick description—so you can get answers quickly without waiting for an inspection.
Carpenter ants are typically larger than most ants, with black or black-and-red bodies and a smooth, rounded thorax (midsection). Unlike termites, they have a narrow “waist” and bent antennae. You may also notice piles of sawdust-like material (called frass) near wood, which they push out as they tunnel. If you’re seeing large ants indoors—especially at night—it’s a strong sign of a nearby nest.

Carpenter ants don’t just show up – they’re often a sign of a larger issue inside your home
Carpenter ants tunnel through wood to build their nests, which can weaken structural components over time if left untreated.
These ants are often attracted to damp or decaying wood, which may indicate an underlying moisture problem inside your home.
The ants you see are only a small part of the problem. Colonies often expand into multiple nesting areas behind walls and in hard-to-reach spaces.
Over-the-counter solutions may reduce activity temporarily but rarely eliminate the main colony, allowing the problem to return.
